Caol Ila (Gaelic for 'the Sound of Islay') is situated on the north eastern shores of the island, with magnificent views across the Sound to the spectacular Paps of Jura. Despite being the largest distillery on Islay (in terms of production anyway) bottlings of Caol Ila as a single malt are not always easy to find. It nearly all ends up in blends. Frequently passed over, it presents a gentler, more feminine and food friendly expression of Islay that Ardbeg lovers should get to know.
Introduced in 2010, after cask strength versions in 2004 and 2005, this is the first officially-bottled Caol Ila 25 Years Old to be bottled at 43% ABV. This is a very welcome addition to the official range, with a rich, gentle mouthfeel and restrained, coal-esque phenols.
